We welcome applications for membership from anybody who is a health professional or working professionally for transgender health. This includes people who provide direct or indirect care to transgender people, people in paid or unpaid roles, and transgender and cisgender people. We are a multidisciplinary professional association, with members who work in medicine, surgery, allied health, law, education, community organisations, policy, advocacy, and academia.

Our members are not restricted to people with health qualifications. For example, students of relevant disciplines and people providing peer support to others navigating the medical system may be eligible for membership. The key distinction is that members must be engaging with PATHA in a professional capacity - rather than as a patient, client, or person seeking healthcare for themselves or on behalf of others.

From time to time, we receive applications where the applicant's role in transgender health is not clear. We engage with these applicants to discuss further and seek more clarity. If an applicant is seeking support or resources for their own gender affirming care, we are likely to decline the application and we may recommend other support services or navigational support options. If you have any uncertainty about whether you would be considered as working in transgender health by our definition, please reach out to us to discuss this directly.

PATHA does not deliver healthcare or support services directly to transgender people. The organisation's official purposes are to:

  • Educate professionals and to develop and promote research, knowledge exchange and high-quality evidence-based healthcare for transgender people;
  • Promote networking, communication and collaboration, and create supportive environments for professionals working with and for transgender people;
  • Promote healthcare based on transgender community partnerships and leadership, Māori and Pasifika models, and human rights perspectives which emphasise informed consent and depathologisation of transgender people;
  • Advocate for institutional, policy, and legislative reform to advance transgender people’s health using our collective knowledge and expertise.

Members of PATHA get access to our email list, the opportunity to network and promote your work to others in the field, discounts on symposium attendance and education sessions, and are eligible to join ASHM as an affiliate member under our reciprocal agreement with ASHM.

Please note, that completing this form does not mean you are automatically accepted as a member of PATHA. Our executive committee meets regularly to consider new membership applications, so you can expect to hear whether your membership is approved within six weeks.

Please choose one of the payment options below to apply for membership. You will be able to select your membership option (Unwaged/low waged, Waged or Senior Medical Officer) prior to completing your order.

  • Unwaged/low waged: $20 per 12 months

  • Waged: $100 per 12 months

  • Senior Medical Officer: $220 per 12 months

There is no difference in functionality or membership rights between the membership options.
